Impact in India: A Uniquely Efficient Return on Investment

by Justin deTray, Managing Director Wealthspire Advisors, TRI Board Finance Chair

Investing in education in developing regions like India can not only transform lives but costs a fraction of what it would in developed regions like the U.S. Consider these real examples:

Gurap
Bay Area
The lower construction and operational costs in India offer a dramatic multiplier effect. For the price of one school in the Bay Area, you can fund over 20 schools in India—each serving 1,200 students—vastly increasing access to education.

Furthermore, investing in quality learning environments in underserved regions drives economic growth by empowering graduates to contribute to their communities. These investments improve individual lives and generate broader benefits like better health, more jobs, and long-term societal gains that far exceed the initial cost.

Simply put, your donation goes further in Gurap—creating lasting, scalable impact where it’s needed most.

HOW LOVE IS WINNING AT ST. XAVIER'S GURAP

DESTROYING BARRIERS TO PROSPERITY

  • by uplifting each student with love

  • by maintaining a school uniquely dedicated to Santal students

  • by providing access to modern technology, advanced science courses and English language skills

  • by nurturing and celebrating personal potential, cultural connection and love of learning

  • by fostering leadership development and offering meaningful community responsibilities

  • by prioritizing life skills and holistic education, preparing students for success in both academics and the mainstream economy

  • by empowering our girls with the same academic and leadership opportunities as the boys

  • by challenging societal norms around early marriage and promoting inclusive education on puberty and menstrual health

RECOGNIZING THE VALUE OF HOLISTIC EDUCATION

You are underwriting

  • 15 computers, 40 headsets and desks for a second computer lab—giving our students access to essential technology

  • 2 new math teachers, 2 new science teachers, additional English and primary teachers, tutors, and athletic coaches

  • a female counselor—an absolute game changer in bridging village life to mainstream culture and building academic resilience

  • a second licensed nurse—an important addition to the physical health and wellness of our growing student population

  • an additional girls’ hostel matron—mentorship and student safety is a No. 1 priority

  • 600 track suits in 4 colors for SXSG’s 4 houses—uniforms build community and school identity, and were essential to a formal, first annual Sports Day

"Tribe Rising is a perfect example of incredibly passionate humans making positive change in our world. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty—and with excellent leadership, kindness and expertise, Tribe Rising has made an impact. What a blessing to be able to support directly here and know the funds are fully being used in India properly."

"Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love."

HELPING A COMMUNITY THRIVE

  • by supporting the first managing board of the school, featuring 2 teacher and 2 parent representatives

  • by assigning a highly skilled Jesuit regent, who is a Santal, to the staff

  • by accepting long-term (10 months) young adult volunteers from Germany

  • by hiring 3 mothers of students to work as custodial/kitchen staff support

  • by scheduling time for practice of cultural dance and music as an integral part of each week

  • by creating leadership and mentoring rolls for tweens and teens in cultural performances, academics and sports

  • by allowing tweens and teens separate time for studying, dance parties and socializing

  • by providing computers, water filter systems, electric kettles with coffee/tea trays and a new filing cabinet in the female and male teacher lounges, creating a space for gathering and sharing ideas

  • AND, by warmly welcoming the class of 2036!

HELPING A COMMUNITY THRIVE

A Simple Snack Made with Love

The students at St. Xavier’s Gurap have a tasty tradition—they snack on puffed rice every afternoon. This snack might sound simple, but the process of making it is pretty interesting! Traditionally, rice is puffed using a machine that heats sand, separating the rice in the hot sand, and then separating the rice from the sand using a sieve. Now here’s the fun part: Tribe Rising India helped bring a machine to campus that does this magic, and it’s significantly reducing costs. This is yet another example of how a small investment—around $900—is making a big impact, providing significant savings on food costs every day. And it’s super fun for the kids!

GREATER IMPACT

Impact on the Community: Hope

“I try every day to inspire the Santal children in order to become more respectable in the broader society.”

– Bharati, Head Teacher / Boarding Mistress

A young Santal woman, a teacher at the Gurap school

“It is important to build up this school, because it is meant only for the Santals. If they can remain here K to grade 10, they will not get lost. If they go out and mix in the mainstream (schools), their confidence will be shaken. (Here) they can get the special attention they need (to thrive) and later they will be better able to compete with the Bengalis.”

This is more than charity. This is our mission.

We meet people where they are and get our hands dirty, working with and for them. Together with Tribe Rising’s supporters, we are creating real generational change.

Where We Came From?

The first high school built uniquely for Santal students will hold 1,200 eager learners. This modern building is equal to upscale high schools that were, until now, inaccessible to the poor.

The Girls’ Hostel

This modern 3-story dormitory for girls and young women looks like a colorful flag of hope. With your help, these female students are breaking free of caste and cultural barriers:  choosing education over early marriage, planning careers and betting on themselves.

The Border Wall / Land Purchase

The border wall is a massive structure that delineates the boundaries of all the land belonging to the school and screens the full K-12 campus. There is some undesignated land just waiting for the next big idea!

DONOR-ADVISED FUND GIVING (DAF)

WHAT IS A DONOR-ADVISED FUND (DAF)?

A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is like a charitable investment account for the sole purpose of supporting charitable organizations you care about. Donor-advised funds are the fastest-growing charitable giving vehicle in the United States because they are one of the easiest and most tax-advantageous ways to give to charity.

When you contribute cash, securities, or other assets to a donor-advised fund at a public charity, you are generally eligible to take an immediate tax deduction. Then those funds can be invested for tax-free growth, and you can recommend grants to any eligible IRS-qualified public charity.

HOW TO GIVE THROUGH A DONOR-ADVISED FUND?

Recommend a DAF grant through your financial institution or foundation.

You can recommend a gift by contacting your financial institution or foundation or by granting via your financial institution’s or foundation’s online portal.

Call your fund manager and recommend supporting Tribe Rising, along with the amount of the grant. Your fund manager will send a check directly to Tribe Rising from your fund.

Please request that your name and address is included on the check.

MATCHING GIFTS

Matching gifts are a type of giving program that is set up by companies and corporations as an employee benefit. After an employee donates to a nonprofit, they may be able to submit a matching gift request to their employer, and the company may make an additional donation to that nonprofit. If you need assistance submitting a company match, please email [email protected]

DONATIONS OF STOCK

By giving appreciated property like stocks or bonds, you can avoid paying capital gains taxes on the appreciation, receive a tax deduction for the full value of the gifts and support Tribe Rising at a lower cost to you. Please check with your tax advisor to determine the full deductibility of your donation. Our tax identification number is 84-2093593.

When we receive a stock gift, our policy is to sell the stock as soon as possible after the receipt of the gift. If you wish to donate stock, please use the following procedure:

Notify your broker that you are making a charitable gift to Tribe Rising. Then, instruct your broker to transfer the stock into Tribe Rising’s account at:

Receiving Institution: Charles Schwab
DTC Number: 0164
Account Title/Registration: Tribe Rising India
Receiving Account Number: 5366-0817
Contact Name: Annette Venables
Contact Email: [email protected]

After you have completed the transfer, please notify Annette Venables to let her know the arrangements that you have made. This is important because your broker may not include your name in the transfer and we may not know who the stock is from. Notifying us enables us to track the transfer of the stock and acknowledge your gift promptly. If you need assistance, please contact us at [email protected]

LEGACY OR PLANNED GIVING

By including Tribe Rising (Tax ID: 84-2093593) in your estate plans, you can provide the resources necessary to change lives—today, tomorrow and for generations to come!

A deferred gift can help you balance your financial goals and your charitable interests – all while achieving significant potential tax benefits. A planned gift, such as a bequest in your will or trust, life insurance designations, or stock donation, ensures your support for the children we serve well into the future.

Sample Bequest Language

For an unrestricted gift that allows Tribe Rising India to determine how to use the funds based on the most pressing needs, use the following language for your will and/or trust:

I give the sum of $___ or ___% to Tribe Rising India, 35 Miller Ave, #185, Mill Valley, CA 94941 (Tax ID: 84-2093593) to be used or disposed of as the Board of Directors deems appropriate in its sole discretion.

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)

If you own an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and need to take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), you can donate to any 501(C)(3) charity directly through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). Most IRA owners in their seventies are eligible to make this type of donation, and because the money goes directly from your IRA account to one or more charities, it is an extremely tax efficient method of donating financial resources to causes and endeavors you support.
