Interview with Katharine and David Spencer

Katharine & David Spencer were some of Tribe Rising’s very first supporters. Check out their reasons for doing so, and learn a bit more about these two fabulous individuals in the interview below!

Q: What impels you to support Tribe Rising? And why should other people care about what Tribe Rising is doing?
We have supported Tribe Rising from the beginning after Fr. Maria Joseph visited our parish. We both value education and were struck by the difficulty the Santal children had accessing it. Tribe Rising has made an amazing difference in this corner of India and we are happy to be a small part of it and would encourage others to do the same. It feels good to support a small non-profit where we know all the funds raised go directly to the school.

Q: Was there someone or something in high school that influenced you as a student, or set you on a career path?
David: I remember a mathematics teacher called Mr. Davies who really brought out my love of numbers and I have since enjoyed a long & varied career in finance.
Katharine: I really enjoyed being in class with a particular geography teacher when I was in 9th grade. This led to me studying Geography at university before I changed direction and became a chartered accountant. Then I changed direction again and became a therapist. See, geography helped me all the way through!

Q: What was the best trip you have ever taken?
In 2015 we were lucky enough to take time off work and do a road trip in the US, taking in the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon and Yosemite, which were all amazing. After a chance meeting with an old friend in San Francisco, we ended up moving here from London the next year, so that trip totally changed our lives.

Q: What is the best book you have read in the past 12 months?
David: American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins
Katharine: The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride

Q:What is the one thing you’d like to share with the Gurap students?
David: you can’t go back and change the beginning of your story but you can start where you are and change the ending.
Katharine: Do your best each day with what you have; no one can expect more than that.
