Impact on the Community: Hope

“I try every day to inspire the Santal children in order to become more respectable in the broader society.”

– Bharati, Head Teacher / Boarding Mistress

“It is important to build up this school, because it is meant only for the Santals. If they can remain here K to grade 10, they will not get lost. If they go out and mix in the mainstream (schools), their confidence will be shaken. (Here) they can get the special attention they need (to thrive) and later they will be better able to compete with the Bengalis.”

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead, anthropologist

“Because of the intervention of Mill Valley, the face of the school has changed, the Spirit of the Fathers working here has changed — the ground is fertile!”

“I am very happy to teach the Santal children, being a Santal myself. Little children, age 4½ leave their parents, they need someone to be with them all day and I am happy to do it. I am being a “parent” and I feel responsible for fulfilling the desires of their parents. I wish that they could continue studying here and become somebody big in society—this would bring big smiles to their parents’ faces. This is my prayer for them.”
