Gurap students reaching for the stars
On August 23, India became the fourth country in the world to land a spacecraft on the moon. In July, India “officially” surpassed China as the most populated country in the world. Sometimes the stars just align and the time is right is for new opportunities and big changes. Thanks to the support of our generous supporters,Tribe Rising India is already on a trajectory to help Santal students reach heights they have never dreamed of before! Please join us for the 2023 Annual Fundraising Gala on November 4 and celebrate a whole bunch of lives poised for future soft landings! Purchase sponsorships and tickets at the bottom of this page.
Some of St Xavier Gurap’s Brightest Stars
Meet Kornali! She and her twin sister are currently in eighth grade at St Xavier Gurap and, in January, will be part of the first high school class! Kornali’s thousand-watt smile is fueled by a powerful energy and joy that is infectious! Her commitment to giving 100% drives everything she does, and her desire to do something to help others is palpable. She is radiant! Her teachers agree that she has tremendous potential.
Kornali and her sister are part of a small group of children at Gurap who have lost one or both parents. Kornali and her sister lost their father during Covid and their mother was concerned the girls would have to leave school. Thankfully, with support from the broader Jesuit organization and the monies Tribe Rising India is able to provide, no child is turned away from Gurap because of lack of funds.
Meet Bipin! Bipin has been a student at St Xavier’s Gurap since 2015—he has grown up in Gurap. Bipin says he loves his school and feels at home there. He is part of the first 8th grade class, and soon will be one of our first high school students. When Bipin was younger, he thought of being a doctor because there is not a hospital close to his home—something that clearly made an impact on him. Now, Bipin is still thinking of others but his dream has changed. In halting English, he struggled to express his desires to help others. First, joining the army to “collect so much monies” and start a business. Then he would give money to people “who do not eat anything.” And finally, Bipin wants to build a high school to help students “be ready to study.”
His path may still be unclear, but one thing is clear, Bipin is on course to make the world a better place for others! Thanks to you, Bipin has the resources to make the his dreams come true. And, thanks to you, we can all have hope for a future that is kinder and more generous—a prosperous future the whole human family can enjoy.
Gurap’s students work hard, but Sunday is for fun! “Students had a fishing competition between different classes. Class VI students caught 8.5 kg and won the first place, and class VII caught 8 kg …..altogether they caught 52kg.” Guess what’s for dinner?
